Why choose hardwax oil?
Hardwax oil is a popular choice for treating wood, and not without reason. This finish combines the nourishing properties of oil with the protective action of wax. The result is a strong, wear-resistant layer that protects the wood against moisture, dirt and daily use, while retaining its natural appearance.
An important advantage of hardwax oil is that the wood can continue to “breathe”. Unlike varnish, it does not completely seal the pores, allowing the wood to retain its character. In addition, it is easy to repair locally. Have you sustained damage? Then you do not need to retreat the entire surface, a major plus for floors and furniture that are used intensively.
At Engels Verf we understand that every project is different. That is why we offer a wide range of hardwax oils from well-known brands, so you can always make the right choice. Visit the store for expert advice or discover our range online. This way you are sure to choose quality and convenience.
Engels Verf Hardwax-Olie: our own top product
Looking for a reliable én affordable hardwax oil? Then the Engels Verf Hardwax-Olie is an excellent choice. This high solid oil has been developed for wooden surfaces in the home and garden and offers durable protection with a beautiful, natural appearance.
The oil provides a transparent, satin finish with a so-called “wet-look” effect. This means that the grain and colour of the wood are extra accentuated, as if the wood is slightly wet. Ideal for those who want to enhance the warm appearance of wood without hiding it.
Thanks to the smart 2-layer system, the first coat penetrates deep into the wood for a strong base. The second coat forms a protective top layer resistant to wear, moisture and stains such as coffee and wine. This makes the oil perfect for intensively used spaces such as living rooms, kitchens and staircases.
In addition, the Engels Verf Hardwax-Olie is:
- Suitable for various wood types such as oak, pine and bamboo
- Easy to apply with a brush or roller
- Economical in use (up to 24 m² per liter)
- Fast-drying (8–12 hours depending on conditions)
- Saliva and sweat resistant, safe for families with children
Available in 0.5L, 1L and 2.5L. Order easily through our webshop or come to the store and let yourself be convinced by the quality and price.
Osmo Hardwax-Olie: premium protection for wood
In addition to our own house brand, you will also find the high-quality products of Osmo. These hardwax oils are known for their excellent quality and durability and are widely used by both professionals and discerning DIYers. Looking for a proven top brand with a long lifespan? Then Osmo Hardwax-Olie is absolutely worth considering.
Osmo combines natural oils and waxes into a powerful formula that penetrates deep into the wood while simultaneously forming a protective top layer. The result is a wear-resistant, water and dirt-repellent finish that allows the wood to breathe. As with other hardwax oils, the natural appearance of the wood is retained, but with a slightly fuller and richer finish that is characteristic of Osmo.
An important advantage of Osmo Hardwax-Olie is its high resistance to intensive use. This makes it particularly suitable for wooden floors, staircases and furniture that are heavily used on a daily basis. In addition, the product is easy to maintain and repair locally, without having to treat the entire surface.
At Engels Verf we are happy to help you choose between Osmo and our own brand. Do you want maximum premium performance? Then choose Osmo. Looking for an excellent price-quality ratio? Then the Engels Verf Hardwax-Olie is a smart choice. Come to the store for advice or order easily online – this way you always get the best solution for your project.
Applications and processing of hardwax oil
Hardwax oil is versatile and suitable for almost all wooden surfaces. Think of floors, furniture, staircases, doors, walls and even ceilings. Both indoors and outdoors it offers reliable protection, provided it is applied correctly.
Good preparation is essential for the best result. Make sure the wood is clean, dry and free of grease. Sand the surface lightly for optimal adhesion. Then apply the oil evenly with a brush or roller. Allow the first coat to absorb and dry before applying the second coat.
The ideal processing temperature is around 20°C with a relative humidity of 50%. Under these conditions the oil dries evenly and you achieve the best end result. After complete curing you enjoy a strong, water-repellent and wear-resistant finish.

Frequently asked questions about hardwax oil
What is the difference between hardwax oil and varnish?
Hardwax oil and varnish differ mainly in how they work and in appearance. Hardwax oil penetrates into the wood and nourishes it from within, while simultaneously forming a protective layer on the surface. This preserves the natural structure and appearance of the wood. Varnish, on the other hand, lays a completely sealing layer on top of the wood, resulting in a tighter and often glossier end result, but less natural in appearance. An added advantage of hardwax oil is that the wood can continue to breathe, reducing the chance of cracking and peeling. In addition, a surface treated with oil feels warmer and more natural than varnished wood.
How many coats of hardwax oil should I apply?
In most cases, two coats of hardwax oil are sufficient for an optimal result. The first coat penetrates deep into the wood and provides a solid base and nutrition for the material. The second coat forms a protective top layer that makes the wood resistant to moisture, dirt and wear. With intensively used surfaces, such as floors or staircases, it is especially important to apply this second coat carefully. Between coats it is important to allow sufficient drying time and to lightly sand for better adhesion. More than two coats is usually not necessary and can even produce a less attractive end result.
Is hardwax oil suitable for floors?
Yes, hardwax oil is one of the most popular finishes for wooden floors. Thanks to its wear-resistant and water-repellent properties, it is excellent for withstanding daily use such as walking, sliding furniture and spilling liquids. In addition, the oil provides a natural, warm appearance that fits perfectly with both modern and classic interiors. Another major advantage is the ease of maintenance: with damage or wear marks you do not need to sand the entire floor, but can repair locally. This makes hardwax oil a durable and practical choice for both homes and commercial spaces.
Can I easily repair damage?
Yes, one of the biggest advantages of hardwax oil is that it is very easy to maintain. Small damages, scratches or wear marks can easily be repaired locally without having to treat the entire surface again. You lightly sand the damaged area and apply a thin new coat of oil. This ensures that the repair blends seamlessly into the rest of the surface. This is a big difference from, for example, varnish, where often the entire surface needs to be re-sanded and treated to prevent colour differences.
How long does it take for hardwax oil to dry?
The drying time of hardwax oil is on average between 8 and 12 hours per coat, depending on factors such as temperature, humidity and ventilation. At an ideal processing temperature of approximately 20°C and a relative humidity of 50%, the oil dries most evenly. It is important to ventilate the surface well during drying, but to avoid draughts. Although the surface is often dust-dry after half a day, it takes several days before the oil is fully cured and can be fully loaded. For floors it is recommended to be careful with intensive use and the placement of heavy furniture during the first few days.
